Summer Reading

Here are some books I have read this summer with a short summary:

  • 50 Shades of Grey Trilogy: I don't think I need to include a summary as I'm sure most of you have an idea.  But it was a good easy read!
  • A Same Kind of Different as Me by Ron Hall and Denver Moore: This is a great non-fiction read if you're in the mood for that.  Ron and his wife decide to start volunteering at the homeless shelter once a week and end up meeting Denver Moore who forever changes their lives.  Denver came from Louisiana where he was still a "slave" in the 1960s, he ended up homeless and met Ron and his wife.  It is very interesting to read about their two journeys and how they come together.  It is kind of religious, which I personally do not like reading about.  However, this book did make me really think about how Chris and I need to start volunteering and helping those in need.
  • Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks: This is a historical fiction story that takes place during World War I.  This book takes you into the trenches in France during WWI.  The story is about Stephen trying to survive the war and deal with the heartbreak caused by the woman he loves.  It's a slower book to read, but it was really good because you slowly learn how all the characters are connected.  There is even a Masterpiece Theater based on this book on PBS :)  Can't wait to watch it!

  • The Island by Elin Hilderbrand: GREAT beach read.  I really enjoy her books as a  beach read.  This book takes place on Tuckernuck Island near Nantucket.  Four women come together to deal with their issues.   Chess has broken off the wedding with her fiancĂ©.  Bird is Chess' mother trying to comfort Chess.  Tate, Chess' sister, is still single and still hopelessly in love with the caretaker's son on Tuckernuck Island.  And India, Bird's sister, is still dealing with the heartache from her husbands suicide 15 years ago.  This is a great beach read and I recommend it if your'e looking for something light and easy to read :)

  • Jackdaws by Ken Follett: Another historical fiction book, this one takes place during World War II.  This is about a group of women who are recruited into a secret mission taking place in France.  Their goal is to blow up the main telephone line the Germans are using in France.  It was very exciting, I couldn't put it down!

As you can tell, I'm loving having time to read and make new recipes this summer :)
